| I believe that authorizing the sale of the Plan B drug over the counter is a bad idea. The FDA should not give in to political pressure from groups led by senators such as Senator Clinton and others who are on the far right wing of the pro-choice issue. One does not have to be anti-choice to believe that keeping drugs such as the Plan B drug, as a prescription only option.
Anyone who is pro-choice can still make the same choice if this drug is only administered by prescription. Selling this drug over the counter greatly increases the possibility of abuse by young girls and increases the possibility of the drug being shoplifted by those who want it, but cannot afford it or by those who want to keep their sexual activity a secret from their doctor. The possibility of theft or purchase for sale to other young ladies is also greatly increased, as well increasing the availablility of this drug at drug trading parties.
If the FDA keeps this drug off the counter, available by prescription only, the chances of these things occuring would be greatly reduced and women and young women who chose not to carry their pregnancy cna still make that choice.
Please do not make a public health issue into a political issue. I encourage you to stand firm in the face of political pressure and continue the prescription status of this drug.
