GENERAL
GENERAL
Products from cloned animals must be labeled. Cloned animals may be safe for consumption, but there are other issues involved. Some consumers will surely object to eating products from cloned animals because of ethical or religions concerns. There must be clear labeling so these consumers can use the market place opt out of consumption to fulfill their personal values. Without labeling, and the ability to direct food dollars using the market, citizens will turn the other, less efficient means to address their concerns. For example, the court system is difficult and expensive to access for the typical consumer and necessarily slow in producing outcomes. Using the political system subjects our elected officials to the pressures of rent seeking by dominant stakeholders to the detriment of the average consumer. Most dangerously, frustrating the consumer's desire for low-cost information will drive some to extra-legal action in the form of vandalism or other violence. This could endanger our food supply and those who participate in it. In short, without obvious information about cloned animal products, consumers will be unable use inexpensive market mechanisms to exercise their values. Do the right thing - require labeling of products from cloned products.
