| I am writing to demand that all food items that are derived through cloning techniques be properly and clearly labeled on the packaging. All consumers should be given the basic right to decide for themselves whether or not they eat cloned animal products (or products derived from cloned sources).
I am NOT a vegetarian. I grew up on a farm and raised many animals for our food and the market. If, however, these cloned food products made it to the market and they are NOT labeled, I will be sending my vote through the system by becoming a vegetarian and no longer buying ANY meat/milk products.
The only reason I can possibly think of as to why these cloned food products would not be labeled is because it is known that the majority of consumers would not purchase the items and would instead purchase natural food sources. The lack of labeling only makes sense on the corporate end of the debate. Big Business knows that people do not want cloned food items.
I'm also very skeptical of the reports commenting on the safety of cloned food products. This is a very new science (with only a few hundred cloned animals in existence in the US)! Theoretically there is no difference between two animals that are genetically identical. True. But how can you guarantee that not the slightest genetic change occurs during cloning? We are all very aware of what a slight 'malfunction' in the genetic code can do to life. I'm quite sure, that in the end, the final reports will state that cloned foods are safe. (I'm sure you're quite aware of how powerful and influential Big Business is within the FDA). We were given genetically engineered foods (without labels of course...and we know why) that were engineered to withstand more pesticides being dumped on them (and we know where those extra pesticides end up...in the bellies of the poor that can not afford organic produce). If left in the hands of Big Business genetic changes will always benefit themselves through profits with complete disregard to the consumers that purchase their products (complete disregard except for the PR campaigns that they invest in...for their benefit of course).
I love scientific advances. But I love Freedom even more. I believe in an America that is based and centered on Freedom. The only way to guarantee freedom is to have access to information so it is possible to make an informed decision. If there are no labels on these products then we can not cast a vote and we are being stripped of the basic rights that America supposedly represents.
If there are no labels on foods that come from cloned sources, I would dedicate my life to influencing the minds of my friends and family to stop purchasing all items that come from questionable origins. Please pass the word on to Big Business that their quest for a quick profit will, in the end, backfire on them.
Please make the right decision and label these products and let the consumers vote with their money (the only vote that is guaranteed to be counted in America these days).
