Docket Number 02P-0317From: Dieterich, Lauren [LDieterich@kellencompany.com] Sent: Friday, June 10, 2005 10:18 AM To: Dockets, FDA Subject: Docket Number 02P-0317 June 10, 2005 Division of Dockets Management Food and Drug Administration Dept. HHS 5630 Fishers Lane, Rm. 1061 Rockville, MD 20852 RE: Docket Number 02P-0317 The Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) is a nationwide volunteer organization serving the lupus community, including patients, their families, physicians, researchers, and the general public. Their Web site provides a statement regarding the safety of aspartame, and the inaccuracy about the rumors associating aspartame with lupus: “We are aware there is an email message circulating on the Internet warning individuals with lupus about dangers associated with using the artificial sweetener aspartame. The Lupus Foundation of America consulted with the chair of the LFA Medical Council, Evelyn Hess, MD, MACP, MACR. Dr. Hess is one of the nation's leading researchers in the field of lupus specializing in environmental influences. According to Dr. Hess, there is, as of now, no specific proof of an association with aspartame as a cause or worsening of SLE.” The LFA note that there is no credible scientific evidence to support a link between aspartame and lupus. Please see the attached .pdf for additional information on the LFA statement, or visit http://www.lupus.org/education/faq.html#22.
