| The International Food Additives Council (IFAC) is an association representing a broad range of food ingredient manufacturers, including major suppliers of microbial cultures for use in foods and beverages and producers of high purity substances used as food additives. IFAC respectfully requests that the comment period for Docket 2002P-0122, Conventional Foods Being Marketed as "Functional Foods," be extended for 60 days. "Functional Foods" encompass a number of important issues to the food industry, including companies such as IFAC members who make ingredients for such products. Issues requiring careful review and comment were raised not only in the Federal Register notice of October 25, 2006, but also at the December 5 Public Meeting. The comment period is, therefore, quite short. Additional time is needed to provide FDA with comments to best assist the agency in addressing issues involved. Again, IFAC urges the FDA to extent the comment period by 60 days and thanks the agency for considering this request.
