UCS?s Food and Environment Program seeks to ensure that food is produced in a safe and sustainable manner. UCS supports a stringent rule relating to substances prohibited from use in animal food or feed. UCS was disappointed to learn that the Food and Drug Administration?s proposed rule falls short of what the agency proposed 19 months ago and that it ignores the recommendations of an international review panel of experts brought together by the USDA. The rule should be amended in accordance with expert recommendations to prohibit the use of blood, poultry litter, restaurant plate waste, and all mammalian and avian protein in cattle feed.
