Anti Counterfeit TechnologiesFrom: John Clouston [j.clouston@aclabels.co.uk] Sent: Tuesday, January 06, 2004 1:44 PM To: fdadockets@oc.fda.gov? Subject: Anti Counterfeit Technologies I know we have missed the closing date for comment regarding the FDA Counterfeit Drug Task Force Interim Report, but I thought you may find the following information useful. A list of various anti counterfeit technologies was listed in Appendix A but I was surprised to see no mention of variable data printing linked to a secure database. This is a simple and cost effective method of creating unique identities for individual items of mass produced product, and it has been used for years by the mobile telephone industry to sell air time. It forms the basis of a prepaid telephone top up card. In simple terms software is used to generate random alphanumeric codes which are printed onto cards or labels which are then incorporated into the product packaging. Each code is random and unique, and can be overt or hidden beneath a scratch panel. The codes are stored in a secure database and therefore enable product verification via the internet. Counterfeiters are unable to generate valid codes. We are taking this solution to brand owners in the UK and Europe, and you can find out more about the technology on our web site.
