From: Jaffe, Lyle D Sent: Friday, July 30, 2004 2:46 PM To: Dockets, FDA Subject: FW: The beginning of the end for aspartame/ and the European Union -----Original Message----- From: Dr. Betty Martini [mailto:Bettym19@mindspring.com] Sent: Friday, July 30, 2004 2:26 PM To: Torben.Hallas-Moller@efsa.eu.int Subject: The beginning of the end for aspartame/ and the European Union Dear Torben Hallas Moller: I'm Betty Martini, Founder of Mission Possible International, a global volunteer force, warning consumers off aspartame. I visited the European Union a couple of years ago and brought them all the damning government documents including the Board of Inquiry of the FDA's final report which said aspartame is not safe, causes brain tumors and the petition is revoked. In the movie below mentioned Attorney James Turner who with the famed Dr. John Olney attempted to prevent the approval of aspartame, explains that Donald Rumsfeld who was then CEO Searle said he would call in his markers and get it approved even though it wasn't safe. He was on Reagan's transition team and the day after taking office appointed a new FDA Commissioner who would approve, since no FDA Commissioner would allow it on the market for 16 years. However, he was concerned that it might take 30 days to get him there and in the meantime the current FDA Commissioenr might outlaw it. So he wrote an executive order making the current FDA Commissioner powerless to revoke the petition for approval. When Arthur Hull Hayes got there he over-ruled the Board of Inquiry and then went to work for the PR Agency of the manufacturer for $1000.00 a day and has refused to talk to the press ever since. That's how aspartame got approved. Reagan himself got hooked on it and paid the ultimate price (Defense Against Alzheimers Disease by H. J. Roberts, M.D., www.sunsentpress.com ). Memory loss is so prevalent its #9 on the FDA list of 92 symptoms. Up until that time the FDA were hero's trying to get Searle indicted for fraud but both U.S. Prosecutors hired on with the defense team and the statute of limitations expired. Both FDA toxicologists wrote scathing reports. Dr. Jacqueline Verrett said all studies were built on a foundation of sand and should be thrown out. Dr. Adrian Gross told Congress that aspartame without a shadow of a doubt could cause brain tumors and brain cancer and it violated the Delaney Amendment forbidding putting anything in food you know would cause cancer. His last words to Congress were "And if the FDA violates its own laws who is left to protect the public." (Senate, May/August l985, and l987). However, once Dr. Hayes was gone the FDA had ample opportunity to recall it as constant petitions were presented them including one from the Community Nutrition Institute in Washington, D.C. for ban. They wrote because so many people were going blind on aspartame and having seizures. The FDA refused and now had become the handmaiden of the pharmaceutical industry and no longer had any concern at all for safe food and drugs. They continue to approve poisons like Splenda which has a chlorinated base like DDT and can cause autoimmune disease. We constantly get complaints. Even the Editor of Lancet wrote a couple of years ago, Ed Horton, that the FDA takes money from industry and endangers the lives of the people. I also presented them with a citizen's petition for ban over 2 years ago based on the fact that I have their records showing aspartame to be a chemical poison and they lie to the public. The law states they must reply in 180 days and they have refused showing you just how strongly they serve above the law and are linked to industry. I presented to the European Union even industry's flawed research so they would not take that into consideration, such as the Rowan Study. In this case Monsanto was so afraid if they did a study on aspartame and seizures somebody would have a seizure that they actually gave 16 or the 18 subjects anti-seizure medication, and then only one capsule of aspartame for a one day study. Sort of tantamount to smelling the bottle. An outrage. I also presented to the European Union, Dr. Ralph Walton's research paper on scientific peer reviewed research showing that 92 per cent of independent, unbiased scientific peer reviewed research shows the problems with aspartame, and that only industry funded and controlled studies ever said it was safe. And if you remove 6 studies that the FDA had something to do with it because of their known loyalty to the manufacturers, and one pro-industry aspartame review, 100% of independent studies show problems with aspartame. So how did industry ever show a study to be safe based on this revelation. I also presented to the European Union the 1038 page medical text, Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic and told them how to get it. They were not even interested in looking at it. So what did the EU do. They did not use all the damming government documents and research. They omitted it and used the flawed research instead. And they had industry people on the committee. They didn't even read their own research. It was as if they were making it up as they went along. Go to www.wnho.net and click on aspartame and you will see the rebuttal to the European Union report. Do you realize what this means?? It means that if you piled up in front of the European Union 1000 peer reviewed studies showing how deadly aspartame is, the EU would simply disregard them in favor of industry. They have just shown that by not honestly doing the review two years ago. If any studies show how deadly aspartame is they don't want it. They sold out the people of Europe. What's more with Codex industry is supplying vitamins now and they are putting aspartame in them, even when you swallow them and don't need a sweetener. People from the UK are calling and complaining because they don't know where to turn. And the way aspartame got approved in England is that Searle made a business deal with a Paul Turner in the regulatory agency and he approved it without anyone knowing. When Parliament found out they had a big blow-out but didn't rescind the order. The Guardian wrote an article about it. No studies were done in the UK. That way England would never find out that the FDA not only said aspartame was not safe but wanted Searle indicted for fraud. And so once approved there aspartame was rubber stamped around the world. But the beginning of the end for aspartame is here now. You will note the lawsuits against some of the largest companies in the world like Coke and Pepsi on the front of www.wnho.net And more news is coming. The people are just not going to stand for being poisoned. Even neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock, M.D., author of Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills, (www.russellblaylockmd.com) just released an article showing new research and that a good deal of the population that has been using aspartame for years already has subclinical MS. If not warned it could turn into full blown disease. Today people are literally dropping dead from aspartame. Aspartame which is in reality a neurotoxic drug interacts with all cardiac medication and triggers an irregular heart rhythm. It damages the cardiac conduction system and causes sudden death. See all the reports on www.wnho.net click on aspartame. Also read Dr. H. J. Roberts paper on www.dorway.com, Aspartame and chest and cardiac problems, and Dr. Blaylock's paper, Aspartame, MSG and other excitotoxins and the hypothalamus. The bottom line here is if you piled up 1000 scientific peer reviewed studies on aspartame showing how deadly it is, the EU would disregard them. After all, we did a test run two years ago and that's exactly what they did. So the people don't have a chance at all. We can't get the truth from the EU. Everyone there who had a part in this should be removed from office. And I hope everyone in Europe will see it. BITTERSWEET: Is this the beginning of the end for aspartame? Is the writing finally on the wall for aspartame, the artificial sweetener used in diet and sugar-free drinks and foods? There's been a very effective campaign to keep the lid on a devastating catalogue of diseases linked to the sweetener, but in recent weeks we've noticed a few straws in the wind. Some brave souls have put together a film, Sweet Misery, which documents "one of the most pervasive, insidious forms of corporate negligence in history", as a spokesman has put it. (Get Sweet Misery by emailing cori@soundandfuryproductions.com ) And now academics are getting in on the act, and have shown how aspartame can lead to overeating. A study by Purdue University found that artificial sweeteners disturb our natural abilities to monitor calorie intake. Not that any of this is revelatory. Government agencies have known for decades that aspartame is deadly. It was once on the Pentagon list of bio-warfare chemicals submitted to Congress and, in 1984, Dr Woodrow C Monte observed: "Methanol (one of the breakdown products of aspartame) has no therapeutic properties and is considered only as a toxicant. The ingestion of two teaspoons is considered lethal in humans." But his warning came too late. Aspartame had been approved in the States two years earlier as a safe food additive. It took centre stage once saccharin was discredited after studies showed a link between it and bladder cancer. Aspartame was seen as a good substitute - and one that packed a kick for all those with a sweet tooth, as it is 200 times sweeter than sugar. Its rise continues unchecked today, especially as its patent has recently expired. Around 5,000 products on the market contain the sweetener, and the list is growing by the day, and includes diet sodas, fruit drinks, frozen lollies, instant breakfasts, chewing gum, cocoa and other instant drinks, supplements, drugs, and yoghurt. Because it is a food additive, no post-marketing trials of its safety are needed. It's not even listed as an ingredient on some products such as vitamin supplements. Even so, aspartame accounts for more than 75 per cent of adverse reactions to food reported every year to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Some of these reactions are very serious, including death. Despite these alarm calls, it's been down to individual scientists to investigate the dangers of aspartame. Aspartame is a dipeptide (that started life as a drug for peptic ulcer). It's made up of L-phenylanine (50 per cent), aspartic acid (40 per cent) and methanol (10 per cent). Some claim that phenylanine on its is a health hazard, and that certainly becomes more likely if it breaks down to methyl ester which, in turn, becomes methyl alcohol or methanol (remember, two teaspoons is lethal.) If it doesn't kill you, methanol can cause blindness. The US Environmental Protection Agency advises daily maximum methanol consumption of just 7.8 mg - and yet many cans of diet sodas contain twice that, and a diabetic using aspartame all day could consume 30 times that amount. So what causes this breakdown? High heat and prolonged storage have both been shown to transform aspartame into a more dangerous substance. An interesting study linked Gulf War syndrome to diet soda drinks that were kept out in the hot desert sun. The evidence is becoming too overwhelming for the authorities to continue to ignore this sweetener. It's now been linked to multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, migraine and headache, brain cancer, chronic fatigue and epilepsy. Even the powerful groups that protect aspartame surely cannot withstand the tide for very much longer. * It's a major worry for anyone who takes vitamin supplements that they could contain aspartame.
