Stop & Shop Vanilla Ice Cream with Chocolate Coating - this e-mail is from (privacy). She has the remaining bars and would like to have them tested. Our 5 year old son is allergic to peanuts. He's never had a reaction except for the initial breakout when he was 15 months old. I've been diligent about reading all labels and mainly cook everything myself. Last night he ate a Ice Cream Bar w/ Chocolate Coating on it. It was the first time I ever purchased these but read the ingredients and it looked fine. There was no disclaimer on the package, so I thought they were safe. After eating it, his right eye became swollen and red. It was very itchy. I then took his clothes off and he had a silver dollar size hive on his spine. I called my and gave him Benedryl and Orapred. He fell asleep about 2 hours after this happened and seemed to sleep fine through the night (with me beside him). The information for the ice cream is as follows: Stop & Shop Ice Cream Bars - Vanilla Ice Cream with Chocolate Coating - 12 2.5 oz bars. Brach's Jellybeans - (privacy) called to tell us she found two packages of these candies and one had a warning but the other did not. She called the manufacturer and was told that all their jellybeans and candy corn are made on equipment that processes peanuts and tree nuts. They told her the new packaging has a warning, but there is still a lot of product out with the old packaging. Zachary Marshmallow Eggs labeling concern - this e-mail is from (privacy): My daughter, age 7, is seriously allergic to peanuts. We never leave the house without her Epi-pen and we are very diligent about reading labels. I wanted to pass on some information to you so that you may share it with others. Today I went to purchase some candy for my children for Easter. I picked up a package of Zachary confections, Inc. marshmallow eggs and I noticed that it said "Allergy Information: Manufactured in a facility that processes peanuts/nuts." on the side and I promptly put it back on the shelf. At the same time I was thinking, --I thought this was the brand that I had in my house that my daughter had recently eaten. (she has eaten 5 over the past week and a half) When I got home from the store I checked and I did have a carton of the chocolate marshmallow eggs. The reason I missed it the first time is because the very important allergy information statement was not near the ingredients at all. In fact it was on the other side of the box. I feel that this is extremely careless of this company. It should be listed right next to the ingredients. Which, by the way, is on the front of the carton. The allergy info was on the back under the nutrition facts. I feel the possibility of a product containing a life threatening food allergen is much more important than how many calories and fat grams the item contains. This could have been a devastating situation had the marshmallow egg really contained any peanuts. Reading ingredients, and allergy information should be easier and companies should be more responsible. _______________________________________ Debbie Scherrer, Member Communications The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network 10400 Eaton Place, Suite 107 Fairfax, VA 22030 1-800-929-4040 Phone: 703-691-3179 Fax: 703-691-2713 http://www.foodallergy.org/ _______________________________________
