I'm confirming that my rule to auto forward these messages to you is working? Felicia -----Original Message----- From: The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network [mailto:faan@foodallergy.org] Sent: Monday, March 03, 2003 5:13 PM To: Satchell, Felicia B Subject: FAAN Product-Related Member Calls, February 10-28, 2003 As always, everyone who calls FAAN about a product is instructed to call the manufacturer if they haven't already done so. Gonnella Breadcrumbs - this e-mail is from (privacy): Just wanted to let you know that evidently Gonnella Bread Company has changed one of their products ingredients. I have always used their seasoned breadcrumbs because they did not contain sesame seeds. When I purchased a new container they suddenly had sesame seeds on the ingredient list. Calls to the company regarding better notification of changes were not returned. A definite example of how you always need to read the ingredients even if you have used the product before. Luckily, I followed that advice and averted a potential serious reaction. Jolly Time Microwave Popcorn - this e-mail is from (privacy): My 6 year old daughter (privacy) has severe dairy allergy, and enjoys popcorn. In a search for a safe microwave popcorn, I noticed on the Jolly Time Microwave Popcorn "Healthy Pop" the box states "artificially flavored". The ingredient list however states "artificial and natural flavors". I wrote the company asking what exactly the "natural flavor" is, and the following email is what I received. I thought you would like to see it. I was very pleased with the care, quality and promptness with which they replied. The experience also reaffirms to me the importance of reading the entire ingredient list everytime, to be proactive and ask if something is unclear. It also reminds me just how "hidden" a hidden ingredient can be. Dear (privacy): Thank you for your e-mail. All JOLLY TIME Microwave Pop Corn flavors contain some flavoring ingredients that are derived from a dairy source, typcially butter and cheese. The dairy ingredients comprise a very small percentage of the finished product, usually less than 1/4 of 1%. Our JOLLY TIME KettleMania does not contain any dairy components, but I would also like to point out that all of our microwave products are manufactured on the same equipment so there may be traces of casein remaining which could be a concern for you. The JOLLY TIME product you could serve without hesitation is our kernel pop corn you pop yourself. If you prefer the stovetop method of popping corn, we are the only national pop corn company that produces both yellow and white pop corn packaged in poly bags and 30 oz. jars. I am mailing to you, at the above address, a coupon good for a free poly bag of JOLL Y TIME Pop Corn. Please accept this with our compliments. Thanks for thinking of JOLLY TIME. Keep poppin' Judy at JOLLY TIME Pepperidge Farm Hamburger Rolls - (privacy) called to tell us that she found undeclared sesame seeds on the bottom of the rolls. She notified the company and plans to call the FDA. Crystal Farms Dairy-Free Margarine - (privacy) called to tell us that her 10-year-old son ate half a piece of toast spread with this margarine and experienced an itchy mouth and throat. His symptoms went away after she gave him hydroxyzine. Upon further inspection she found it contained artificial butter flavor. Stuckey's Cashews Packed in Soybean Oil - (privacy) said she bought this product for her daughter, who is allergic to peanuts but not cashews. Before giving it to her she called the manufacturer at 800-423-6171 and was told that all their cashews in cans are labeled that they are processed in a plant with peanuts. There is no warning on the bags of cashews, but they are processed on the same equipment. Ken's Lite Salad Dressings - this e-mail is from (privacy): Kens lite dressing (all types ) are now putting SOY in the product to make it Heart friendly, I called the company and was told they will make no more soy free dressings. Please check it out.
