Pacific Foods Broth - this e-mail is from (privacy): I am a little upset. I have been purchasing different flavored broths made by Pacific foods to cook for my 16 month old son who has severe milk and nut allergies. Their labels appear very straight forward and don't have the key words one would look for with these specific food allergies. On a whim I went onto their website because something has been bothering my son. After researching the FAQ section regarding their broths I found that they are not listing a source of Milk. Below is the excerpt from their website: All Natural and Organic Chicken Broth...INGREDIENT STATEMENT - NATURAL CHICKEN FLAVOR...COMPOSITION - CHICKEN, SKIM MILK POWDER, SALT. The Skim Milk Powder is not an ingredient we add to our broths. To get the best Chicken Flavor, the skim milk powder is used to enhance the NATURAL CHICKEN FLAVOR during its manufacturing process. Once the flavor is made, our supplier cannot document the level of Skim Milk Powder in their finished flavor. Taking the conservative approach, we have chosen to add it to our labels as a possible warning to those individuals highly allergic to dairy products. I have several containers of their broth in my possession and not one of them lists Skim Milk Powder! I just thought that someone there may be interested in my findings. I am going to take it out of my sons diet to see if it helps. I would just hate to see someone become very ill. Baker Girl White Cake by Purity Foods - (privacy) called to tell us her 5-year-old milk-allergic son had a reaction shortly after eating this cake. It began with an itchy tongue, so Lisa gave him Benadryl. It progressed to hives, choking, coughing, and a rash from his neck to his ankles and she gave him the EpiPen. She tried to report the reaction to the FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator. First, she called 313-225-6260, but left several messages and didn't get a return phone call. Then, she looked up the number 317-226-6500, and the person she spoke with there told her the FDA doesn't deal with consumers. She is very frustrated by the lack of response. She still has the remaining cake. Wonder Bread Stone Ground 100% Wheat Bread - (privacy) called to tell us she saw some seeds that she suspects to be sesame seeds on the bottom of the bread, which didn't list any seeds. Trader Joe's Dry Roasted & Unsalted Almonds - (privacy) called to tell us she found a partial peanut inside the package (code 2037270401/LL in a plastic bag). Keebler Vienna Fingers - (privacy) called to tell us her son has eaten these cookies for years, but now the package has a warning that the product may contain traces of peanuts. She called the manufacturer and was told nothing has changed, but they are more aware now. Kellogg's Pop-Tarts Frosted Brown Sugar Cinnamon - (privacy) called to say egg is not listed on the label of the package she bought, but she has seen it on other packages. When she called the manufacturer she was told that the computer showed that egg is in the product, but perhaps the computer had not been updated with the latest information. They're sending a mailer so she can send them the product. On Friday 12/6 Kellogg announced a recall on this product. Cape Cod 40% Reduced Fat Potato Chops - (privacy) called to tell us she is allergic to peanuts and had a reaction to this product. When she called the manufacturer she was told that their Barbecue Chip has ground peanuts in it, and this product is made on the line next to the barbecue chips. The company's phone number is 888-881-CHIP. Bath & Body Works Mango Mandarin Body Lotion - (privacy) called to tell us this product lists milk protein in the ingredients and her 5-year-old son, who is allergic to milk, had 2 reactions. He did not use the product himself, but Cherianne used it. The first time, she had just showered and used the lotion and immediately went to wake him up in the morning. She sat and snuggled with him for a few minutes, and when he got down she noticed he was red across his shoulders. He soon broke out in hives all over. She took him to the allergist, who told her to use Benadryl several times for the rest of the day. He cleared up and she didn't use the lotion anymore. Two days later, she wore the same shirt, which had not been laundered, and her son climbed into her lap to snuggle. Within a few minutes, his eyes and face were swollen and he again broke out in hives all over. The product also contains soy milk, but he is only allergic to milk. Challah from Shalon Strictly Kosher Market - this e-mail is from (privacy): My 3 1/2 year old son has a severe tree nut allergy. Last night he had a reaction after eating a slice of Challah from Shalon Strictly Kosher Market in Wheaton Maryland that was baked the week of November 18, 2002. The baker confirmed with me this morning that the Market uses tree nuts in some of its baked goods and it is possible there was cross-contamination with the challah. Kudos Granola Bars, M&Ms flavor - now have almonds listed in the ingredients according to (privacy). Her daughter has eaten these in the past, but when she read the label on the box she just purchased, almonds are at the end of the ingredient list. She thinks it may have been added to the other Kudos flavors, also. She called the company, and the first person said that almonds are not listed. Then they put her on hold and when they came back to her they said it has just been added. They called her back and said they have added a new fruit and nut granola bar to the same line that contains almonds, so they have added almond to the end of the ingredient list on all flavors because of cross contamination. _______________________________________ Debbie Scherrer, Member Communications The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network 10400 Eaton Place, Suite 107 Fairfax, VA 22030 1-800-929-4040 Phone: 703-691-3179 Fax: 703-691-2713 http://www.foodallergy.org/ _______________________________________
