Tofutti Cuties Vanilla Flavor - (privacy) called to tell us her 5-year-old son had a reaction. He is severely allergic to milk and egg, and has always avoided peanut because his mom (Amy) is very allergic to peanuts and he has had a questionable result on a peanut test. While he was eating the Tofutti Cutie he started itching, then had rapid coughing and said his throat felt funny. (privacy), who is a physician, gave him Benadryl and a breathing treatment, and his symptoms resolved without needing the EpiPen. She called the manufacturer and spoke with (privacy), who didn't even take her name and phone number, and who told her that sometimes the batches have excess alkali that can cause these symptoms. Two weeks ago a FAAN member in California reported her son's anaphylactic reaction to Tofutti Cuties, and an allergist in Vermont reported his patient's anaphylactic reaction to Tofutti Vanilla frozen dessert in a pint container. (privacy) is in New York. She has the remaining Cuties from the same box. Duncan Hines Classic White Cake Mix - (privacy) called to tell us that she called Duncan Hines about their Classic White Cake Mix, which lists natural flavor in the ingredient statement. She was told that the natural flavor contains a "nut residue". Nabisco Ritz Crackers - (privacy) e-mailed this frequently-reported problem: I was eating a pkg. of regular Ritz crackers when I discovered a blob of peanut butter smeared onto about 5 of the crackers. The pkg. was bought about 3 weeks ago. My son has a severe peanut allergy and he eats regular Ritz crackers all of the time. Nasoya Tofu - this e-mail is from (privacy): I wanted to let you guys know that Nasoya Tofu is manufactured on shared equipment with a peanut product. It is not listed on the packaging- I called their 800 number after my peanut allergic daughter developed hives immediately after eating their tofu, which had never given her a problem before. They were very nice on the phone and said that they did their best to sanitize the equipment and even tested the tofu for peanut, but that they recommended peanut allergic people avoid their product. _______________________________________ Debbie Scherrer, Member Communications The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network 10400 Eaton Place, Suite 107 Fairfax, VA 22030 1-800-929-4040 Phone: 703-691-3179 Fax: 703-691-2713 http://www.foodallergy.org/ _______________________________________
