Nabisco Halloween Oreo Cookies - this e-mail is from (privacy), who still has the remaining cookies from the package: My son, (privacy), has life-threatening food allergies to nuts & shellfish. this past weekend he ate 3 halloween oreo cookies by Nabisco and immediately started sneezing, serious nasal congestion and swollen eyes. he was up through the night with terrible stomach upset. i called the telephone number on the package (1-800-NABISCO) and spoke with (privacy) who assured me that IF these cookies were made on the same equipment as peanut containing products, they 'flush the system' to be sure there's no remaining allergens. I know my son suffered as if he may have had a fragment of a nut. He has missed 2 days of school from this incident. We are extremely cautious and read all labels. In the past (privacy) has shown immediate reactions. I feel that this should be looked into further. (privacy) told me that she would pass my information on. I know your organization will help with this matter. I'm afraid this may happen to another child since there is no indication of nuts on the label. Pepperidge Farms On the Go Chocolate Chip Minis-Nantucket Chocolate Chunk - we heard 4 more complaints about the previously-reported discrepancy between the labeling on the outer package of this multi-pack, which contains no warning, and the warning "May contain peanuts or nuts" on the inner packages. We heard from these members: (privacy), (privacy), (privacy), (privacy). Corn Crunch/Um's by Health Valley - (privacy) called to tell us her 13-month-old daughter, who is allergic to wheat, soy, rye, milk, egg, and peanut, had a reaction. The label lists these ingredients: "Milled yellow corn, corn bran, evaporated cane juice, salt, and natural Vitamin E (added to preserve freshness)." (privacy) called the manufacturer before giving the cereal to her daughter to be sure that there was no chance of it containing wheat. They assured her there was no wheat or rye in the product. When her daughter ate it, she broke out in hives all over. She gave her Benadryl and her symptoms cleared up. When she called the company back she was told that all their products contain soy, that they list it as Vitamin E. Tofutti Non-Dairy Original Premium Frozen Dessert, Vanilla Flavor, Pint Size - Dr. Edward Kent, an allergist in Vermont called to tell us his patient, a boy allergic to peanut and egg, had an anaphylactic reaction to this product. The doctor suspects contamination with peanut or egg. The mother had discarded the product and washed out the container before bringing it to the doctor. The ingredient list on the container includes no peanut, egg, or nut ingredients. The code on the container is FEB 4 02 0562. Dr. Kent's phone number is 802-864-0294 and his e-mail is kent@tlaaa.com. Tofutti Cuties Vanilla Flavor - (privacy) called to tell us her 11-year-old daughter, who is allergic to peanut, nuts, and egg, had an anaphylactic reaction. She ate the whole Tofutti Cutie sandwich bar and 2 minutes later complained that her throat was scratchy. Within 3 or 4 minutes she said her stomach hurt. They administered EpiPen and she was taken to the ER, where she was observed, but no further treatment was needed. The product code appears to be 20520704. Tofutti Vanilla Frozen Dessert, Pint size - (privacy) called to tell us that the ingredient statement on the vanilla package seems to be for the Better Pecan flavor. She called the manufacturer, but they are not answering telephone. Entenmann's Singles - Member (privacy) called to report a reaction her egg- and nut-allergic daughter had to Entemann's Singles (packaged in small pie-like boxes). She had hives for several days. She does not have any of the product left. Nabisco Ritz Crackers - (privacy) and (privacy) both e-mailed with reports of a common complaint, Tamara's e-mail is copied here: My son's teacher told me that she had recently opened a package of plain Ritz Crackers and found "Peanut Butter" smudged in the inside wrapper. Even though the box ingredients did not list anything about peanuts or manufactured in a plant using peanut products, it was still in the actual wrapper. Kathleen's Homestyle Bake Shop Chocolate Chip Cookies - (privacy) called to tell us there are no nut ingredients listed on the label, but when she opened the package it contained chocolate chip with walnuts cookies. _______________________________________ Debbie Scherrer, Member Communications The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network 10400 Eaton Place, Suite 107 Fairfax, VA 22030 1-800-929-4040 Phone: 703-691-3179 Fax: 703-691-2713 http://www.foodallergy.org/ _______________________________________
