Topp's Ring Pops - (privacy) called to tell us her 4-year-old son with milk allergy had a reaction after eating this candy. He quickly complained that he felt like he was going to throw up and that his chest hurt and he couldn't breathe. He became lethargic and was falling asleep. They used the EpiPen and took him to an urgent care facility, where they said his heartbeat was very slow and irregular. When she called the manufacturer she was told that they make their clear pops (the kind the child ate) first, then make the cream pops (which contain milk). They rinse the equipment before switching back to the clear pops. The woman at the company told her they didn't believe this to be a serious problem and told her before they would consider changing their labeling they would need a statistic for the percentage of children with severe milk allergy. Pepperidge Farm Nantucket Chocolate Chunk Minis - we received three more reports of the discrepancy in labeling on the multi-pack from (privacy), (privacy) and (privacy). There is no warning on the outer packaging, but the individual packs inside have a warning that they may contain peanuts and nuts. Kellogg's Apple Cinnamon NutriGrain Bar - (privacy) called to tell us her 4-year-old peanut-allergic son had a reaction. He ate the whole bar and within a few minutes had hives on his face. Ten minutes later he was complaining of stomach pains, and in about another 10 minutes his eyes became red and swollen. She gave him Benadryl and took him to the doctor's office, where he was given prednisolone and Zyrtec. She contacted Kellogg, and they are sending for the remaining bars so they can be tested. Trader Joe's Chicken Vindaloo - (privacy) called to tell us she had a reaction. We also received another report of a reaction to this product on June 14. She is an adult with peanut allergy. Within 15 minutes of eating the Chicken Vindaloo she said her throat began to close. She took Benadryl and was ready with her EpiPen, but she began to feel better and didn't use it. She ate the entire entrée and has nothing left but the packaging. Gingerbread Cookie Wreath Kit, manufactured by Kid's Cooking Kits - (privacy) called to tell us her 6-year-old daughter, allergic to eggs and nuts, had a reaction. She took one little lick off the side of the spoon that had been used to stir the water into the powdered icing mix and instantly said, "Mommy it's happening, I feel like something's stuck in my throat!" She also had vomiting. When Jeannette called the manufacturer they said, "Yes, there is egg white (meringue) in the frosting mix, it says so on the package." However, there are no egg ingredients listed on the package they bought. Edy's Whole Fruit Sorbet, Coconut Flavor - (privacy) called to tell us she has purchased Edy's Whole Fruit Sorbet many times and up until now all the flavors were safe for her milk-allergic child. She was surprised to see that the new coconut flavor contains milk ingredients, which are listed on the label. _______________________________________ Debbie Scherrer, Member Communications The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network 10400 Eaton Place, Suite 107 Fairfax, VA 22030 1-800-929-4040 Phone: 703-691-3179 Fax: 703-691-2713 http://www.foodallergy.org/ _______________________________________
