Comments for FDA General
Questions
1. General Comments I am in full agreement with the FDA that all medications should be bar code scannable. However I am opposed to the proposed 3 year grace period for implementation. My 70 bed hospital is currently utilizing bar code technology for drug distribution. We have to package or label about 70% of all our drug items. While we check all our packaging and labeling for accuracy, the process would be much safer if it were carried out at the manufacturer level. Drug manufacturers can respond very quickly to labeling and packaging concerns when it is in their economic best interest. They should be required to respond just as quickly when it is a matter of public safety. I believe that the deadline for implementation of Bar Code Label Requirements for Human Drug Products should be no later than December 31, 2004.
