The Tourette Syndrome Assoc., Inc. is writing to express full support of the proposed HHS/Guidance Document dealing with issues of financial conflicts of interest in human studies research. Among the many valuable points to consider, we view the separation of financial and scientific decisions to be key. The establishment of fully independent Conflict of Interest Committees (COICS) will contribute enormously to a reduction of such conflicts thereby restoring full public confidence in the integrity of the local IRB's, individual investigators, sponsors and research institutions.
We hope this initiative is but a prelude to making these sound practices mandatory.
