The common use of Ephedra exampifies the health risks created by using any Chinese herbs for non-medical purposes. This herb is used as medicine in China, and also by American practitioners of Chinese Medicine. It is included in remedies for asthma and acute respiratory infections. Ephedra should remain available for use by licensed practitioners of Acupuncture, whose scope of practice includes Chinese Herbal Medicine. We are liable for malpractice if the herb is misprescribed causing harm to our patients. The concern for misuse of this substance is valid, but regulatory measures must not prohibit dispensing of the herb by licensed professionals.
