Comments for FDA General
Questions
1. General Comments I am a small retail health store in a town around 28,000 and have concerns about the recent issues of the herb ephedra. I participated in the road to DSHEA in 1994 and felt the authority given to the FDA was well within reason to control the regulation of dietary supplements for protection of public health. If I am understanding this Act properly the FDA can already seize dietary supplements that pose a risk. And futhermore, the HHS can stop the sale of an dietary supplement if it imposes and immeinent public health hazard. With this in mind new implenemtation of the GMP standards just published should be given ample time to take effect and see if these efforts will work. Time will only tell if newly imposed stronger regulations will fix the problem. Consumers are educated in my store to read labels. Also, staff and myself take time to read labels and ask appropriate questions to consumers who are anticipating buying ephedra products. We do as much as we can as a small store to insure safety of any product that is sold. Please consider every angle before a decision is made. Please hold on to the power that was given to FDA in the DSHEA Act and utilize the use of Associations to comment on their areas of expertise. Sincerely, Debra Short
