Questions
1. General Comments Simply because a few high profile individuals have missused ephedra does not give cause to its being scapegoated. Many common household items can be problematic if not used judiciously. Unwise use of salt, sugar, even drinking water can result in health problems. Consider the consequences of peanuts for certain individuals. How many prescription drugs are missused daily? And with much greater tragic results. What is the number of deaths due to allergic reactions to antibiotics or the improper antihypertensive prescription, or any other number of drugs. What is really at issue here is the fact that ephedra is a reliable, effective, inexpensive treatment for many respiratory problems. The pharmaceutical companies are aware that this could cause result in lost revenue for them as consumers become more aquainted with alternative methods. They are the ones who really gain when access to ephedra is minimised. And of course the public loses, and gets to pay the higher costs of proprietory prescription drugs. Ephedra has been used safely for many hundreds, maybe thousands, of years. How many proprietory preparations can make that claim? Why should we be denied access to ephedra just because a very few individuals choose to misuse it? When used properly ephedra is a wonderfully helpful, affordable herb for people with respiratory problems. Let's allow people to make their own decisions.
