To Whom it may concern: First amendment protections must not be extended to corporations advertizing food and drugs! The First amendment is in place to protect the free exchange of ideas and information among people. It is not for allowing corporations to be unopposed in their efforts to influence the choices of consumers. We can't let corporations have the ability to say whatever they please! The tobacco and fast-food industries are under attack because their advertizing claims have been harmful to people. The more we learn about the effect of advertizing on children the more alarmed we become. We have seen from the recent corporate abuses that corporations are not self-regulating; competition motivates them to stop at nothing to increase profits. Society needs to have the means to regulate these entities in a proactive and preventive way since there are few effective remedies for wrongdoing after the fact. The FDA is in place to ensure the public welfare. Make it the tool of corporations and you indeed serve us poorly. Yours, Katherine Williams Santa Monica, California
