Subject: Please grant 98P-0151/CP1 to prevent slaughter of downed
animals

Dear responsible FDA members,

   Plase grant petition docket number 98P-0151/CP1 to probibit the slaughter
of downed animals for human food.  I believe the use of downed or diseased
animals will contributed greatly to the increasing health problems of the
American population.

  From the meat consumed by people with the stress and pain
hormones/chemicals from the downed animal in pain or the cancerous growths,
infected abscesses, mastitis, gangrene, malignant lymphoma, pneumonia, CNS
(central nervous system disorder) or other bacterial/viral infections on the
animals that we consume, the health of the American people will be put in
jeopardy.  Cancer and other sicknesses continue to increase in the
population which I believe is in large part due to the quality of the food
that is consumed on a daily based - diseased, stressed animals pumped full
of antibiotics and hormones; pesticides and chemicals in our "healthy"
fruits and vegetables; chemicals leached from plastic containers increasing
breast cancer and other cancers.

    Also, it is in our best interest for us to treat a living beings,
animals included, with kindness and compassion.  Downed animals are commonly
dragged with chains or pushed with tractors and forklifts, causing injuries
ranging from bruises and abrasions to broken bones and torn ligaments.
Downed animals typically suffered for hours or days without receiving food,
water or veterinary care and in many cases were left to die of neglect.
Does any living animal who feels pain (just as our pet dog or cat does)
deserve to suffer like this?

   A Zogby America poll of 1,000 U.S. adults found 79 percent oppose the use
of animals too sick to stand, known as "downed" animals, in the human food
supply, said Farm Sanctuary, an animal protection group based in Watkins
Glen, New York.  The poll, which had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2
percent, was conducted earlier this week for Farm Sanctuary.
