Dear Mary, At your symposium I would like to deliver a presentation on the possibilities of using Bar Code readers that are part of an interactive system in a patient's home to insure and report compliance and their drug regimen. Bar Codes are being used in institutions and pharmacies to reduce errors and to increase the productivity of the delivery system My company, Meds-Alert USA, Inc., has developed and patented a system to bring the use of Bar Coded medicines into the home of the patient. The use of the Meds-Alert USA, Inc. system can greatly reduce the major proglem in chronic disease management (as identified by the National Coalition of Health Care), which is the failure of the patient to faithfully follow their drug regimen. Meds-Alert USA, Inc. is searching for a strategic partner to develop and deliver this system. It is estimated that 25% of nursing home patients are institutionalized in order to insure the proper administration of their medicines according to a 1999 FDA study. The problem in delivering good care often is the patient's failure to comply with prescribed medicine regimens. This often causes expensive emergency room visits and/or then institutionalization (nursing home, hospital) especially in the elderly. Patients have contradictive behaviors: . They do not want to face the disease ("I do not feel bad"); . Hence they do not faithfully follow the medicine and treatment regimens; . They do not inform doctors or follow through with the doctor (follow-up visits are missed or the patient lies about their compliance) because they greatly fear their loss of independence. A sizeable segment of the population that requires medication have difficulty with: . Not filling prescriptions; . Forgetting, by mistake or on purpose, to take medications; . Taking the medications at proper times and intervals; . Taking the proper medication; . Double dosing; . Confusing and mixing up medications. All of these actions are potentially life threatening and lead to an acute condition. The most common cure for people with these problems is to institutionalize them, usually in nursing homes. Most of these patients are elderly and may be in the beginning phases of senility, dementia or Alzheimer's Disease. The key to increasing productivity in health care is to improve the self-management of the patients. This is where the use of an in-home interactive system that uses a Bar Code reader to assure the proper drugs are being taken at the proper times and combinations, comes into play. I would also like to address the benefits of using Bar Codes with "Unit Dose Packaging" to the patient. "Unit Dose Packaging" with Bar Codes will facilitate the development of interactive, in-home, automated drug dispensing. This development has enormous implications for the reduction of medication errors and therefore cost. Please advise if there is anything further I can furnish you.
