From: KMay784901@aol.com Sent: Tuesday, May 15, 2001 1:16 PM To: FDADockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: 98P-0151/CP1 I was just notified by a farm animal sanctuary in my area about the petition asking to prohibit the slaughter of downed animals. Animals that are sick or injured should not be allowed to enter the food chain. These unfortunate animals pose a health threat to the individuals which consume this food. Has anybody been watching the news from Europe in regard to "Mad Cow Disease"? This situation can occur in this country, are you willing to put yourself or your family at risk? It is impossible to move "downed" animals humanely, by using tractors to push or drag these animals with chains causes them even more injury. Prohibit the marketing of these unfortunate animals, allow them to be humanely euthanized, let them at least die in peace. Thank you. Kathleen May Vacaville, California
