From: TTaylordoc@aol.com Sent: Monday, March 26, 2001 3:29 PM To: fdadockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: Docket 00N-1396 & Docket 00D-1598 I have learned that the FDA is about to approve genetically engineered (GE) food products into the human food chain with rules that do the following: * Do not require mandatory pre-market safety testing * Do not require pre-market environmental review * Do not require mandatory labeling of GE foods * Restrict voluntary labeling of non-GE foods * Require a mere letter of notification prior to the marketing of a GE food Respectfully, I wish to voice my opposition to the rules as currently proposed. The FDA would never approve a drug this way, or even a food additive. The potential for harm is too great to be cavalier about GE foods. The fact is no one has any idea of what the short, medium and long term effects could be on human health by the addition of such foods. I support research and scientific testing as to the safety and advisability of introducing GE foods, and their potential long term effects, before any are approved for marketing to the public.
