From: Endymion [endymion@lunalushede.org] Sent: Monday, March 26, 2001 1:57 PM To: fdadockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: dockets 00N-1396 and 00D-1598 I am alarmed at the possibility that the American public may soon be faced with genetically altered foods in our food supply, and yet have no idea that such alterations are present in the foods that we consume. I believe that the FDA would be entirely remiss in its duty to the American people if it allows unlabelled genetically altered substances to be sold and consumed. I implore the FDA to mandate that any genetically altered foodstuffs be clearly labelled as such, whether as a primary product or as a component of combination products. Such a decision will in no way impede commerce but will allow people to make an informed decision about the foods that they eat. To do otherwise sends the message to the public that the FDA cares only about the corporate interests who seek to slide their mutated products in under the noses of an uninformed public. There can be no reasonable excuse for failure to require genetically altered foodstuffs to be labelled as such. The FDA must require genetically altered foods to be clearly labelled as such. Sincerely, Patrick R. Chambers Grandview, MO
