This rule will not only keep meat from possibly diseased animals out of the food supply, it will encourage the humane euthanizing of sick or injured animals at their place of origin without subjecting them to a traumatic trip to the slaughterhouse. Additionally, the threat of economic losses may actually encourage better treatment of animals to prevent them from becoming sick or injured and thus not salable.
