From: Irma [roaminirm@msn.com] Sent: Sunday, March 25, 2001 7:36 PM To: fdadockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: Docket OON-1396 & Docket OOD-1598 Gentlemen: Please use common sense and concern for the human being when considering the subject rules. Without knowing the full impact that genetically engineered (GE) food, we could be exposing human beings to unknown horrors in our future. Had we known we would produce deformed babies, by giving pregnant mothers under-tested medication, should we have tested more? Seems we skipped that extra expense and proceeded. This is just one of thousands of instances where we have proceeded with a new technology without knowing the full impact of the results. If the producers of GE foods are sure of the safety of their product, let them plainly label them so we, the consumer, may make our own decisions, and have that information (along with what medications we are taking, what plants are blooming, what new product we are using) available for our doctor, in the event we have an adverse health problem. Am I properly informed that the rules would RESTRICT voluntary labeling of NON-GE Foods? If this is true, a person should be even more suspicious of GE Foods. What are the GE Food people afraid of? Why would the FDA deliberately interfere with information I need to make informed decisions about my own food? Testing is a Must Labeling is a Must Sincerely, Irma Ruth
