From: Sstriep@aol.com Sent: Sunday, March 25, 2001 1:53 PM To: fdadockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: Docket 00N-1396 & Docket 00D-1598 I am appaled that the FDA is considering new rules on genetically engineerd foods that do not require mandatory pre-market safety testing, do not require pre=market envionmental review, do not require mandatory labeling of GE foods, restrict voluntary labeling of non-GE foods, reequire a mere letter of notification prior to the marketing of a GE food, fail to ensure public access to adequate information for independent review. The fact that these proposed rules are supported by industry and opposed by consumer groups makes me very angry. I am a person with multiple food and environmental allergies. I try to buy and eat only products that I know will not trigger these allergies. The rules you are proposing will make that task not just difficult but impossible, which will further limit my food choices because of my fear of severe allergic reaction. How can this agency, which is suppose to protect my well being, even consider such rules? Shame, shame, shame. It's time for the FDA to end its cozy relationship with the very industries it purports to be regulating and start enhancing its relationship with me, the consumer by protecting my interests and well being!!!
