From: Wes Hargrave [jwhiii26@yahoo.com] Sent: Sunday, March 25, 2001 12:02 AM To: fdadockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: Question regarding Docket 00N-1396 & Docket 00D-1598 Why are we not requiring mandatory pre-market comprehensive environmental tests and mandatory pre-market long-term health testing? These products could be toxic, cause allergic responses, have lower nutritional value, and compromise immune responses in consumers. On a simimilar not why are we not planning to require mandatory labeling of GE products? I may choose to buy them however I want to know ahead of time what it is I am buying. If these products are safe then it should not be a problem to have them proudly labled as such. Also, if they are unsafe, without mandatory labeling, neither consumers nor health professionals will know if an allergic or toxic reaction was the result of a genetically engineered food. Consumers would be deprived of the critical knowledge needed to hold food producers liable should any of these novel products be hazardous. Thank you for your attention in these matters.
