FDA Commissioner Dockets Management Branch (HFA 305) Food and Drug Administration 5630 Fisher's Lane, rm. 1061 Rockville, MD 20852 RE: Docket No. 00N-1396, and 00D-1598 Dear FDA, Please be aware of my intense anger over the failure of the FDA to respond to consumer demands about the use of genetically modified crops. It seems you have caved into the demands of industry rather than the consumer who is in fact your client. You work for the consumer, not the producer. Yet it seems that the consumer has been dismissed out of hand. It seems labelling and testing will not be mandatory. This is like asking the tobacco companies to voluntarily label their product as harmful. Given that labels have to tell about ingredients why not have a mandatory law for gentetically engineered ingredients. If genetically engineered products are so great then surely the producers will be proud to put genetically engineered on the product. Consumers have had to deal with a long list of problems that have arisen in food production. They have had to campaign and lobby to protect themselves. There is little trust in to-days consumer. When their own last line of defence goes over to the other side they will simply have to take the expensive line taken with tobbacco companies. They felt they could absorb the cost of lawsuits and were willing to lie. Unfortunately, food is not something we can just say no to. It is up to the FDA to just say no to producers or to compel them to label their product so the consumer can just say no. Thank you for your time and consideration.
