Comments for FDA General
Questions
1. General Comments The Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York believes that the FDA must require consumer labeling of bioengineered foods or any genetically engineered food products. The current proposal to require premarket notice to FDA of bioengineered foods is insufficient for consumer protection and interferes with free market consumer choice. In a market economy, government regulatory systems should not be used to falsely accelerate penetration of the market by one or another new product. Despite the FDA's current regulatory framework, which stretches the best science out of shape to define genetically engineered foods to be sustantially equivalent to naturally produced foods, people wish to know the source, including the genetic source of their foods, food supplements and medications. The FDA's lack of responsiveness to consumer interest in straightforward factual information is a recipe for lack of trust in government. We need good government regulatory programs that reflect both the reality of the food industry and consumer interests. Please consider our comments in favor of changing your current regulatory approach. Please require the labeling of genetically engineered or bioengineered foods.
