Dear Dr. Henney,

I'm writing to urge you to support Petition 99P-0485  that would ban medically useful antibiotics from livestock feed.

For many years livestock producers have fed human antibiotics to livestock, and this now accounts for about one third of the antibiotics manufactured in the United States each year.  A critical mass of scientific evidence has now shown that this overuse of antibiotics for poultry, cows and hogs has led to drug-resistant strains of bacteria, rendering the anti-biotics less effective for humans.

Governments,health organizations, and scientists around the world have been urging that antibiotics not be abused on promoting grwoth in livestock.  The GAO has said that research has now linked the use of antibiotics in animals with antibiotic-resistant strains affecting humans.  The WHO has recommended that antibiotics used to treat humans not be used to fatten livestock.  Finally, the European Union has now banned human antibiotics in livestock feed.

I ask you to please to ban the use of antibiotics in livestock feed if that antibiotic is also used for humans.  I loook forward to hearing your ideas on this subject, and how you plan to address this very critical health issue.
