From: Robert Johnson [robj2711@home.com] Sent: Saturday, February 17, 2001 6:34 PM To: fdadockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: genitically engineered foods to whom it may concern, i am deeply concerned about the safety of our food supply, and the integrity of the food manufacturing business. i strongly urge you to require labeling on all genetically engineered foodstuffs, so that we as individuals may be aware of what exactly we are consuming. i also strongly urge you to do more in-depth testing of these products before they occupy supermarket shelves. the long-range effects of consuming these types of foods are a complete mystery at this point, and currently we are aware that these foods can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. to let the testing and labeling of ge foods be voluntary does nothing to ensure safety to the consumer, and those businesses which fear drop-offs in sales due to such labeling will have an incentive to keep potentially harmful foods far from the testing and labeling process. i as an american citizen demand better service from my government and tax dollars! this is an incredibly serious issue, and deserves far more gravity than you are currently giving it. please reconsider your position before submitting the final version: require extensive testing and explicit labeling on ALL genetically engineered foods! thank you for the opportunity to respond. sincerely, erin johnson vancouver, wa, usa
