From: Melissa McTague [chaucerchik@earthlink.net] Sent: Thursday, March 15, 2001 10:33 PM To: fdadockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: Docket #98P-0151/CP1 We are writing in support of Docket #98P-0151/CP1, regarding the buying of meat from downed cows. We feel strongly that meat from animals too ill or injured to walk should not be sold at auction, nor should they be sent to slaughter (even for pet food). The recent escalation of "Mad Cow Disease," and its subsequent risk to humans is unacceptable, and the processes by which these animals are forced to slaughter (pushing by tractor, dragging with chains, etc.,)is unconscionable. As the amount of revenue brought in by these unfortunate animals is negligible, little economic hardship can be claimed. They should be humanely euthanised and disposed of. Better care and handling of livestock would lower the incidence of animals ever reaching this point of illness and/or injury. We, therefore, feel that by removing the incentive for the sale of these animals, better care would be taken, less animals would suffer, and the food chain would be further protected from disease. Please pass Docket #98P-0151/CP1. Sincerely, The McTague Family
