Why in the world would we want the meat of diseased animals to enter our food chain? Let's just think about that for a minute. From the consumer's point of view it makes no sense. What exactly is wrong with the animal? Do I really want to eat diseased meat? From the animal's point of view it is cruel. I realize that the majority of people in our culture eat meat. That does not mean we cannot treat the animals with some modicum of consideration prior to their destruction. There is no excuse for cruelty. I am advised that downed animals comprise a small percentage of animals slaughtered - prohibiting their marketing should not be a hardship and perhaps removing the market for these animals with provide an economic incentive for those who cannot be reached by any other means. Please grant the petition to prohibit the slaughter of downed animals. Carla D'Amico Phillips, RN, Esq. 3/14/01
