I am one of the thousands of Americans deeply concerned about the proliferation of genetically engineered products in our food supply. I am also an ecologist by education and profession and recognize many potential hazards from genetic engineering. I urge you to use your authority and influence to implement the following governmental actions immediately to protect the public and our environment:
1. Full and accurate labeling of all genetically engineered foods and food ingredients, giving consumers the right to know what they are eating;
2. Stringent, independent, and long-term testing of all genetically engineered products before they are released into the environment;
3. United States leadership in implementing worldwide, scientifically credible regulation of all genetic engineering activities;
4. Adoption of legislation to hold the makers of gene-altered products fully liable for any harm or unforeseen consequences caused by their products;
5. A moratorium on the introduction of any new genetically engineered organisms until the above actions are taken.
