Comments for FDA General
Questions
1. General Comments Dear FDA Commissioner and those others concerned, Thank you for providing this opportunity to comment on the proposed genetically engineered (GE) rules. I would like the FDA to mandate that food packagers and processors CLEARLY LABEL all GE foods. A rigorous and robust set of labelling procedures during each step in food packaging will be the best way to protect consumers should a particular GE food innovation prove hazardous in the future. It is my opinion that a program of voluntary labeling will prove inadequate. But with adequate labeling consumers and health professionals will more quickly pinpoint the source of any new allergies or toxins. The newness of the GE technology suggests that we should err on the side of caution before introducing GE foods into the public diet. A system of THOROUGH SAFETY TESTING is the only sensible approach. The consequences of slapdash testing could be disasterous to public health. ENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCES also MUST BE RIGOROUSLY considered. It would be irresponsible in the extreme to allow widespread use of experimental substances without first subjecting the substances to THOROUGH SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL TESTING. Please recognize the consumers right to know. Thank you for listening Warren C. Leimbach
