I read constantly about animals who are too sick to even stand who are inhumanely treated who should not be allowed to enter the human food chain. They are pushed with tractors or dragged with chains--how can anyone treat a helpless and already desperately compromised animal in this horrendous fashion? This ruthless treatment only adds to their terrible state by causing bruises, abrasions as well as broken bones and torn ligaments. It horrifies me to think of the suffering of these animals and the tortuous pain they endure because of our utter disdain for their terrible plight. I understand that downed animals comprise a small percentage of animals slaughtered and that the prohibition of this marketing will not cause any undue economic hardship on the farming industry. Please grant this Petition to prohibit the slaughter of downed animals. Our overall treatment of farm animals must be drastically improved and granting this Petition this would be a most welcome step towards achieving this goal. I urge you to consider the welfare of these helpless animals and to stop any further dire mistreatment of these poor creatures--their human overseers are the only ones who can relieve them of their pain and suffering and therefore it is imcumbent upon us to do all everthing in our power to permanently end the suffering of downed animals. To the animals, Diane Moss 39-65 52nd Street--7H Woodside, NY 11377
