From: glatella [glatella@optonline.net] Sent: Saturday, March 10, 2001 12:01 PM To: FDADockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: slaughter of downed animals Dear Sir or Madam: I am requesting that you grant the petition 98P0151/CP1 which prohibits the slaughter of downed animals. I am concerned about the treatment of downed animals for a number of reasons. It is impossible to move these animals in a humane way nor does it speak well of us as a species to treat living creatures in a manner which shows little regard for their suffering. Animals who are sick or injured should not be allowed to enter the food chain because they can pose a threat to our food supply. Recognizing real threats to our food supply is as easy as reading about the problems European countries are experiencing in their meat production. Acting upon this petition will do no harm economically since downed animals are relatively few in number when compared to the great number of animals slaughtered. I sincerely hope you will grant this petition as soon as possible. Sincerely, Gail Inzerillo-Latella
