Please support the mandatory testing and labaeling of all genetically engineered crops and foods. On January 17, 2001 the Food and Drug Administration released its Proposed Regulations on Genetically Engineered (GE) Foods. Despite the overwhelming number of Americans who have expressed an opinion in favor of safety testing and labeling, in fact an overwhelming MAJORITY of the American people, the FDA has decided not to require either of these DESIRED measures. Evidence is mounting the genetically engineered plants are threatening the integrity of our crops and food supply and have the capacity to reduce the ability of farmers to control the genetic makeup of the crops they plant. So little is understood of the impact on human health of the genetic changes introduced into the food supply and little is known of how to contain the spread of unknown genetic characteristics once they are introduced. The health of ecosystems and populations is threatened. Especially threatening at this time are crops with built in pesticide genes that can contribute to allergies and to the development of pests which become super resistant to future efforts of controlling them. I am also very dismayed by agribusiness practices of selling genetically modified plants designed to be used with heavy applications of herbicides ( marketed by the very same companies) which remain in the food supply as contaminating residues and which are often a source of toxicity to farm workers and their families. These agribusiness practices have widespread impact on the environment in such a way that they limit the freedom of choice of those who choose not to farm in this manner or consume these types of food. Thank you for listening. Please support this petition. Sincerely, Rosalie Jordan 37 Van Sickle Road Lafayette, New Jersey 07848 rozrj@yahoo.com
