From: Maryanne Appel [FREKUNVEGUN@prodigy.net] Sent: Thursday, March 08, 2001 5:47 PM To: FDADockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: "Downed" animal legislation - Docket No. 98P-0151/CP1 To: U.S. Food and Drug Administration Ladies and Gentlemen: Please know that I support the petition (Docket No. 98P-0151/CP1) filed by Farm Sanctuary that would prohibit the slaughter of downed animals. The inhumane treatment of cows, pigs, lambs, and other defenseless beings that is inherent in this practice should be enough to put an end to the shipping of diseased, disabled, weak, and dying animals and then dragging them to slaughter. In addition to these distressing concerns, there are very serious human health issues to consider here also. These compelling reasons should take precedence over the economic concerns of companies interested more in profit-at-any-cost than in the humane treatment of animals and human welfare. I trust that you will act responsibly in this matter and put an end to the slaughter of "downed" animals. Respectfully yours, Maryanne Appel 1409 Deer Meadow Ln. Boothwyn, PA 19061-1925
