Kuzma, Jr RE: FOOD FOR THOUGHT ON THOUGHTLESS "FOODS" I feel outrage at your new proposed policies on genetically engineered (GE) "foods". Despite overwhelming consumer demand, the FDA still fails to require safety testing and mandatory labeling for GE "foods". Your "notification" policy, an insult to the intelligence of consumers, irresponsibly ignores strong scientific evidence of numerous potential health and environmental risks posed by GE "foods". Perhaps you do not care to admit to yourselves that these "foods" might contain toxins, could cause allergic reactions, have potentially lower nutritional value, compromise immune responses in humans and animals consuming these products, and cause irreparable damage to the ecology. What sentient human would want to admit this horror to themselves? I also staunchly oppose your new "voluntary labeling" policy, which denies consumers the basic right to know the contents of their food. Without mandatory labeling, neither consumers nor health professionals will have any way of knowing whether an allergic or toxic reaction resulted from a genetically engineered "food". Consumers will also lack the critical evidence they need to hold "food" producers liable should any of these novel so-called "foods" prove hazardous. Your proposed rules ignore serious concerns, and have the appearance of a decision made for the convenience of industry at the expense of public health and the environment. I refuse to accept your attempt to make me a "guinea pig" of these untested and potentially dangerous "foods". I trust you will take my concern, along with the concern of thousands of others, into serious consideration. Sincerely, Thomas G. Kuzma, Jr. 2974 Cascade Drive Ann Arbor, MI 48104 Tom Kuzma
