FDA Commissioner Dockets Management Branch (HFA 305) Food and Drug Administration 5630 Fisher's Lane, rm. 1061 Rockville, MD 20852 RE: Docket No. 00N-1396, and 00D-1598 Dear FDA, I am appalled by the inadequacy of the propsed new policies on genetically engineered foods. As a consumer, I believe it is my right to have adequate labeling for me to tell whether the product I am purchasing contains objectionable material. I also believe I have a right to food that has been thoroughly safety tested to protect me from toxins, allergic responses, reduced nutritional value, and other threats. "Voluntary labeling" is not adequate. The right to know should be considered an established right of consumers, not a gift from producers, which can be withheld. Should a person allergic to certain products suffer a reaction because a producer doesn't want to volunteer? Or, should that consumer just forgo using any products that are not voluntarily labeled, even if this means forgoing some products that present no danger and which would be part of a normal, healthy diet? The proposed policy of voluntary labeling is a disservice to consumers and a shirking of the Agency's duty. Please go back to the drawing board and produce something that actually protects consumers and assures our right to know.
