Schwetz Food and Drug Administration 5600 Fishers Lane Rockville, MD 20857 Dear Bernard A. Schwetz, Methylmercury causes birth defects. The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) estimates that more than 60,000 children a year are born at risk for these problems due to exposure to this compound in the womb due to contaminated seafood. When people buy food at the supermarket they do so with the implicit understanding that the FDA is setting limits on contaminants to protect them from damaging themselves and their children with poisons. Right now the standard set by the FDA is less stringent than the standard the EPA and NAS recommend. In order to protect children and pregnant women the standard should be brought in line with scientist's recommendations for safety. I support the petition generated by the Center for Science in the Public Interest and hope you will approve it. Sincerely, Emily Kenney 6721 El Colegio Rd #46 Isla Vista, California 93117
