From: Rossi, Roberta [rossirl@MSX.UPMC.EDU] Sent: Monday, February 26, 2001 2:41 PM To: 'FDADockets@oc.fda.gov' Cc: 'robyn@farmsanctuary.org' Subject: Docket # 98P-0151/CP1 I am writing to ask that you please approve Docket # 98P-0151/CP1. The killing of downed animals at slaughterhouses is not only unhealthy, it is inhumane. A few years ago, I saw videotape of how these animals are prodded, poked, pushed, kicked and beaten to move. Most of these animals were literally paralyzed. How were they expected to move? People are told that the animals that are killed in slaughterhouses never feel pain because they are stunned before their throats are cut. That statement alone is questionable, but what about these downed animals? It is sheer torture and torment for them before they get to the stunning part. From what I understand, the downed animals who would be protected under this docket are not significant enough to cause the meat industry any economical harm. Plus, it would keep even more disease out of the bodies of meat eaters. Thank you for your time in this matter. Roberta L. Rossi Emergency Resource Management, Inc. 412-647-0515 412-647-9076 (fax)
