From: Paula Gregorowicz [paulag@enter.net] Sent: Friday, February 23, 2001 3:18 PM To: fdadockets@oc.fda.gov Subject: Docket # 98P-0151/CP1 I am writing regarding Docket # 98P-0151/CP1 and the petition to prohibit the slaughter of downed animals. I support this petition because of the following points: * Animals who are too sick or injured to stand should not be allowed to enter the food chain * Besides the increased risk for bacterial contamination, some downed animals may be afflicted with a form of BSE ("Mad Cow Disease") which has been linked to a fatal human illness (CJD, Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease) * It is practically impossible to move downed animals humanely, and they are often pushed with tractors, dragged with chains or other inhumane methods which cause injuries ranging from bruises and abrasions to broken bones & torn ligaments. *Downed animals comprise a very small percentage of animals slaughtered and therefore prohibiting their marketing will not cause an economic hardship * Industry experts have estimated that 90% of downed animals can be prevented with better care & handling. Removing the market for downed animals will provide incentive for the industry to prevent the downed animals in the first place. Please do the right and humane thing and grant the petition to prohibit the slaughter of downed animals.
