(FDA Dockets 00N-1396 and 00D-1598) Dear Corporate and Government Leaders, Genetically engineered food ingredients or crops should not be allowed on the market until: 1) Independent safety testing demonstrates they have no harmful effects on human health or the environment, 2) They are labeled to ensure the consumer's right-to-know, and 3) The biotechnology corporations that manufacture them are held responsible for any harm. That GE foods are not labeled as such is a convenient way to avoid corporate responsibility under the guise of providing food for the world's growing population. The true solution to this situation should be by focusing much more education on family planning and birth control and not the genetic manipulation of foodstuffs that create a potential nightmare of catastrophic proportions. How ironic it would be that, in an attempt to feed more mouths, we create the very means to wreak havoc on the lives we propose saving. In view of this irony, such movement toward more and more GE of food products is clearly about maximizing corporate profits and not at all about saving lives. This is unacceptable.
