From: Kristen Benney [kbenney@eagnet.com] Sent: Friday, February 23, 2001 10:37 AM To: FDADockets@oc.fda.gov To: U.S. Food and Drug Administration Dockets Management Branch From: Kristen Benney, 116 Rising Mist Way, Kingsland, GA 31548 I am writing to urge the FDA to prohibit the slaughter of downed animals (Docket number 98P-0151/CP1). The current practice (allowing downed animals to be slaughtered) it is both inhumane and unhealthy. Animals that cannot walk suffer for hours without food or water in hopes that they will still be alive at slaughter time. Prohibiting the slaughter of downed animals may help keep unsafe meat products from entering the market. It may also lead to safer transport of animals in order to prevent injuries which might cause an animal to become non-ambulatory. The marketing of downed animals is an unacceptable practice and I encourage you to act to prohibit it immediately. Sincerely, Kristen Benney
