Since science cannot prove GMO's are safe for long-term human consumption, requiring labeling of GMO products would give every American the freedom of choice we deserve in a democracy. Do you believe the rights of businesses to make profits outweigh the rights of individuals to give express and informed consent? Human knowledge of biochemistry is in its infancy. Despite tremendous potential for genetic modification, unintended consequences are certain to emerge because of the vast complexity of the systems involved. Our experiments with nuclear power and chemistry also showed tremendous potential, but later revealed serious flaws requiring very careful controls. Rapid changes in ecosystems trigger complex reactions, which usually result in extinction. We can jump in the deep end and pray we learn how to swim before we drown. Or we can wade in gradually to reduce the risk of dangerous consequences. We've been on Earth millions of years, what's the rush?
