From: OC EXECSEC Sent: Tuesday, June 12, 2001 2:50 PM To: Dockets, FDA Subject: FW: Do Not Approve A/F Protein's Genetically Engineered Fish--Docket# 01P-0230 -----Original Message----- From: Kyle Jeffries [mailto:dablues@care2.com] Sent: Monday, June 11, 2001 10:42 PM To: Commissioner Subject: Do Not Approve A/F Protein's Genetically Engineered Fish--Docket# 01P-0230 Commissioner , I send this letter to you because I am very concerned that the FDA may allow commercialization of genetically engineered fish. I beg that you do not approve the current application by A/F Protein to sell genetically engineered Salmon. In general, I have a moral distaste for genetic engineering. Specifically, I disapprove of genetically engineered salmon because such a process has the potential to completely alter the earth's environment in a new and negative way. Introducing an organism through such a new and relatively understudied and underregulated means as genetic engineering could cause these engineered salmon to outcompete the natural salmon. Also, new human allergens could potentially arise from such practices. I don't believe that any agribusiness corporation could guarantee the sterility of genetically engineered fish. With biotech's track record (i.e. Starlink corn was mixed with the human food supply), there is plenty of doubt in my mind that introducing genetically engineered salmon will have unintended or unforeseen consequences. Assuming A/F Protein can guarantee that any and all genetically engineered salmon it creates are sterile for their entire lives, ecological and moral problems still outweigh any possible benefits to society. Even sterile genetically engineered fish will have to compete with natural fish for food by natural law. This will result in a forever-changed biosphere. I must declare my right to say "no" to such a short-sighted proposal as this. Given the history of fish farming, I don't believe it takes a professional geneticist, biologist, or ecologist to realize that fish will escape from their intended confines, and under such circumstances, they will have the opportunity to spread globally. Clearly stated, no fish obeys human political boundaries. Hence, this issue, if approved, will affect the world population. The United States FDA is essentially determining the fate of human existence for the world. Please turn down any appeals to produce genetically engineered fish or any other animals by A/F Protein or any other person or corporation.
